Warrior Confronting a Lady-in-Waiting, 1852

Comments - Handsome kabuki scene of the warrior Fukashichi confronting the lady-in-waiting Omiwa at the palace of her master, Soga no Iruka. He is planning to kill the beauty to use her blood in a complicated plot to assassinate his enemy, Iruka. He bars the way for her to escape, flinging his arms wide. He wears a brown and black plaid kimono over red under robe and armor trimmed with yellow fringe, his hair and sideburns sticking out wildly. She leans forward with an anguished expression, clutching her hair with one hand. One sleeve of her outer kimono is pushed down to the waist, revealing a kimono with diagonal tie-dyed bands in blue, tan and red, dotted with white flowers. The room behind them is lined with panels depicting blossoming cherry trees. From left, the actors are Arashi Rikan III as Omiwa, and Ichikawa Danjuro VIII as Fukashichi. Great expressive figures with fine line work in the hair.
