Stone Lantern, circa 1830s

Series; Secret Meetings by Moonlight

Stone Lantern, circa 1830s - Lovely image of a beauty reading a letter by the light of a stone lantern, smiling as she leans over the paper. A shaft of light illuminates her face and upper torso, and a matching beam falls from the other side of the lantern. She wears a brown kimono patterned with circular floral motifs, tied with a striped obi. A blossoming cherry tree frames the scene overhead, the flowers delicately embossed. A beautiful design with wonderful handling of the effects of light and soft bokashi shading.

Artist - Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Image Size - 14 3/4" x 10 1/8"

Condition - This print with excellent detail as shown. Backed with thin paper. A couple small tears at right edge, a few small holes, repaired. Faint toning, slight soiling near edges. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
