The Spirit of the Cherry Tree, 1837

Comments - Fantastic kabuki triptych of a scene the play commonly known as "Seki no To" about the spirit of the cherry tree. In the center, the barrier guard Sekibei, who has been drinking at the home of the nobleman Munesada, recoils in surprise as the beautiful courtesan Sumizome appears from within a hollow tree, the bottom of her kimono disappearing into the trunk. She is actually the spirit of the cherry tree, come to do battle with Sekibei, who was attempting to chop down the tree. He grips the handle of an enormous axe, scowling angrily. Munesada watches from the right with frown, holding his sword upright, clutching a folding fan as he sits on a cushion. White cherry blossoms frame the sky overhead. Ichikawa Ebizo V appears as Sekibei. A great design with expressive figures.
