Original Kunisada II (1823 - 1880) Japanese Woodblock Print
Battle and Fortress, 1864

Comments - Handsome triptych with an interesting perspective showing a battle in the foreground which fades into a view of a fortress at upper left. Warriors gallop across the battlefield wielding clubs and spears as other samurai engage in hand-to-hand on the ground around them. Troops are massed behind a line of wooden shields at right with banners and pennants fluttering overhead as a rider charges out of the enclosure. At upper left, samurai in armor are gathered in a wooden tower adorned with banners bearing the Kusunoki Clan crest. Along the shore in the distant, a line of troops makes its way through the green hills above the bay. An intriguing format, nicely detailed with lively color.
