Struggling over a Banner, 1847 - 1852

Comments - Great kabuki scene of the Taira warrior Akushichibyoe Kagekiyo struggling with a beauty over a beautiful brocade banner with the Taira butterfly emblem at the top. He grabs hold of one end of the scroll, frowning unhappily, a large naginata in his hand. The beauty at right, who is the wife of the Minamoto general Shigetada, keeps a firm hold on the standard, looking back up at the samurai. Mashiba, the wife of Takesato, kneels behind them, lifting a drapery patterned with the paulownia crest of the Minamoto, staring suspiciously out of the corners of her eyes at Kagekiyo. From left, the actors are Sawamura Chojuro V, Bando Shuka I as Takesato's wife Mashiba, Onoe Kikujiro II as Shigetada's wife. A lively scene with wonderful detail in the fabric patterns and a handsome setting.
