Armor Pulling Scene from the Soga Brothers

Comments - Terrific depiction of the famous armor pulling scene (kusazuribiki) from the tale of the Soga Brothers. Believing that his older brother Juro is in danger, the hot-tempered Goro attempts to rush off to assist him. His friend, the strong man Asahina, tries to stop him by grabbing his armor, and a tugging match ensues. Here, Goro holds a piece of his armor under his arm, glaring at Asahina with a furious grimace, holding his sword in his outstretched hand. His black outer robe is patterned with his trademark butterflies, worn over a red and yellow checked kimono and armor. At left, Asahina looks back at Goro with a sheepish expression. Easily recognizable by his distinctive red "monkey makeup" and flared sideburns, Asahina wears a green kimono with circular crane motifs. A great bold design, vibrant colored and detailed with burnishing in the black kimono.
