Battle of Kawanakajima

Comments - Terrific illustration of the Battle of Kawanakajima between the forces of Takeda Shingen and Usesugi Kenshin. At left, Kenshin gallops into the enemy camp on a black horse, slashing at his enemy with his sword. Taken by surprise, Shingen deftly thrusts out his iron battle fan to deflect the blow as his nearby retainers leap into action bearing spears and swords. The battle rages fiercely all around them with samurai on horseback and on foot clashing with weapons and hand-to-hand. At lower right, a warrior in a horned battle helmet grapples with a fallen enemy, pushing his chin away with his hand. Beyond the battlefield, a river flows past distant mountains. A lively action scene with expressive figures and wonderful detail in the armor and weapons.
