The Tsukiji Hotel in Tokyo, 1868

Comments - Terrific view of the new Tsukiji Hotel in Tokyo, constructed by the Meiji government in 1868 specifically to house foreign visitors. This interesting view shows the back side of the hotel along the waterfront, with men and women strolling about the garden dotted with blossoming cherry trees. The building features a long balcony across the length of the modern stone building, with a porch below, the roof topped with a tower and cupola. Terracotta tiles line the walls, creating a decorative effect while providing fire protection. A large American flag flutters from the pole in the garden below, and at right, a carriage can be seen leaving through a brick archway. At upper left, two insets highlight the unusual spiral staircase of the building, a detail we've never come across before. A fantastic depiction of this historic building, which despite its tile walls, burned down in 1872.
