Warding off Evil Spirits - Fascinating triptych of the custom of warding off evil spirits during the festival of Setsubun in February, which takes place just before the first day of Spring. A man scatters roasted soybeans across the floor to chase away evil spirits and to welcome in good luck and prosperity for the New Year. Beautiful embossed detail in the women's kimono, with the red orange pigment of their robes oxidized to a darker tone. Includes fine burnishing in the black lacquer screen frame and the lamps.
