Gama Sennin and Magic Toad Battle

Comments - Fantastic triptych of the immortal Gama Sennin seated in front of an enormous toad, watching as smaller magic toads battle before him. Some of the smaller toads jab at each other with cattails and leaves, while others wrestle standing on their hind legs. Two samurai dressed in armor flank the immortal, watching with astonishment. Behind the elderly warrior at left, a giant spider sits on its web, several moths or butterflies caught in its silken threads. At right, a young samurai grips his sword in both hands as an array of demons looks over his shoulder. The Japanese legend of Gama Sennin (the Toad Immortal) is based on a 10th century Chinese alchemist and immortal named Liu Hai. An incredible scene of this mythical sage and his magical creatures, captured with lively detail. A great subject for a collector interested in classical Japanese tales.
