Original Kunichika (1835 - 1900) Japanese Woodblock Print
Bandits and Courier, 1866

Comments - Terrific kabuki scene of two bandits confronting the courier Otohei as he travels for a delivery at night. The surprised man flings his arm out at his side, frowning intently at one of the robbers, his package in his other hand. At right, Saikoku Taro leans over his victim from around a wooden pole, wearing a black print kimono over a suit of armor. At left, his companion Togoku Taro looks down with a sinister frown, his brows furrowed. He wears a striking dragon print tunic over his armor, and he carries a gun in his right hand, the red flame of the matchcord glowing against the dark night sky. From left, the actors are Ichimura Kakitsu IV as Togoku Taro, Bando Hikosaburo V as Otohei, and Kawarazaki Gonjuro I as Saikoku Taro. A great design with large colorful figures, nicely detailed.
