Niekawa: Boiling Water Ordeal

Series; Sixty-nine Post Stations of the Kisokaido Road, 1852 - 1853

Kuniyoshi's Sixty-nine Post Stations of the Kisokaido Road - Terrific print from Kuniyoshi's Kisokaido Road series, published between 1852 and 1853. The Kisokaido Road ran between Edo and Kyoto along a mountainous inland route, as opposed to the Tokaido Road, which followed the coast. Kuniyoshi created one design for each of the sixty-nine stations along the way, plus images for Edo and Kyoto. Each features a well-known figure from history or legend, along with a small inset depicting the station itself. These terrific illustrations feature wonderful detail and handsome settings, many with deluxe printing treatments such as fine bokashi shading or burnishing. A great choice for a Kuniyoshi collector or anyone interested in Japanese history and folklore.

Niekawa: Boiling Water Ordeal - Terrific scene of the legendary Japanese hero and statesman Takeshiuchi no Sukune proving his innocence by plunging his hand into boiling water without injury. Takeshiuchi served as a minister to five different emperors, and was accused of treason while serving Regent Jingu. Here, the elderly advisor undergoes the ordeal of boiling water prove himself, the scalding liquid splashing out as he thrusts his hand into the cauldron, burning his treacherous brother Amamiuchi no Sukune, who recoils in pain. Roaring flames lick the bottom of the pot and steam fills the air. The inset at upper left show three travelers pausing to read a signpost at the foot of a bridge. The title cartouche at upper right is framed by noblemen's caps. A dramatic depiction of this famous tale and a great choice for a student of Japanese history.
