Sailors of the Unyokan attack Koka in Korea, 1875

Comments - Dramatic scene of the sailors from the Japanese ship Unyokan attacking Korean forces at Koka Bay. While engaged in nautical surveying, the Koreans shelled the ship, so the Japanese retaliated. In the foreground, a small boat ferries sailors to the shore as a general waves his sword high and men begin shooting. Sailors can be seen on the deck of the ship, and clouds of gray smoke dot the sky as shells explode. An interesting subject, nicely detailed with extensive burnishing in the warship and a dusting of mica across the night sky.
