Kumasaka Chohan and the Pine-tree Lookout, 1849 - 1852

Comments - Terrific triptych showing the rogue Kumasaka Chohan and his gang of robbers gathered around an enormous pine tree, which served as their lookout. A huge campfire burns under the tree, sending clouds of smoke rising into the night sky as the men sit and warm themselves. Chohan can be seen at right sitting on a trunk and gripping a pole arm, his monk's cowl wrapped around his head. Boxes and bundles of loot are partially hidden in the tall grasses, and two of the rogues keep watch from their perches high in the tree. A fantastic night scene with wonderful detail and atmosphere.
