Yuranosuke Clutching Lord Hangan's Dirk, 1898

Comments - Handsome illustration from the classic kabuki play "Kanadehon Chushingura," the tale of the 47 ronin. Here, Oboshi Yuranosuke stands outside the palace, clutching the dirk with which Lord Hangan has been forced to commit suicide. He grimaces as he looks back over his shoulder, vowing at this moment to avenge his master's death. He wears a dotted gray kamishimo over a black kimono, his thinning hair pulled back into a slender topknot. Three samurai stand quietly at right, while two more stroll along the embankment of the moat, birds flying overhead in gray silhouette. Nicely detailed with burnishing in the black robe and fine bokashi shading.

Artist - Toshiaki (1864 - 1921)

Image Size - 13 3/4" x 27 1/2"

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Three separate panels, backed with paper. Loss at bottom left corner of center panel, repaired. Slight soiling. Please see photos for details.
