Lovers Parting, 1852

Comments - Poignant kabuki scene of a married man parting from his mistress under the watchful eye of his wife. At right, the courtesan Shiraito of the Hashimotoya looks down with a sad expression, clutching her kimono sleeve to her chest. Her sweetheart Suzuki Mondo stands behind her, staring down at the floor with unseeing eyes, filled with sorrow at having to leave. His black outer kimono is draped over his shoulders, and he pushes up the sleeve of her boldly patterned white under robe. Mondo's wife Oyaso waits at left, watching him out of the sides of her eyes with a faint smirk, holding out a robe in her hands. A blue and white towel is tied to the wooden window grid to dry above a lamp, a red flame flickering inside the paper shade below. The sky begins to lighten outside as morning arrives. From left, the actors are Onoe Kikujiro II, Sawamura Chojuro V, and Bando Shuka I. A beautiful design with wonderfully expressive figures and fine shading in the sky.
