Courtesan Fan Print, 1881

Comments - Charming fan print featuring a half-length portrait of a courtesan holding a branch decorated for the New Year's holiday with gold coins and slips of colored paper. She wears a striking kimono patterned with swallows in flight against a purple sky and splashing waves, tied with a light blue geometric print obi. Her hair is styled in two large loops, adorned with two combs and many hairpins. Blossoming plum branches decorate the red background. An attractive design, nicely detailed, with metallic pigment on the white kimono collar and obi that has oxidized to a darker tone.

Artist - Fusatane (active 1854 - 1888)

Image Size - Page size 8 7/8" x 11 3/8"

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. A few small holes, repaired. Slight soiling, a few faint creases near upper right edge. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
