A Great Victory: Our Cavalry Driving Back Enemies at Sandaishi and Infantry Occupying Fenghuangcheng, 1904

Comments - Dramatic depiction of Japanese troops driving back the Russians at Sandaishi during the Russo-Japanese War. In the center, a general on horseback leads the charge with his sword held high, galloping over the crest of the hill to meet the enemy. Soldiers are massed behind him carrying guns with bayonets fixed, a Japanese flag fluttering amidst the clouds of smoke rising from the battlefield. At left, a Russian flings his gun into the air as he is shot, while a general with an eagle atop his helmet crouches beside at tree at bottom center. Interestingly, the red artist's seal in the signature cartouche at lower right is in the form of a pair of eyeglasses. A fine illustration from this historic conflict, detailed with fine bokashi shading and touches of embossing. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts has this image in its collection.
