Original Meiji era Japanese Woodblock Print
Chrysanthemum Festival, 1895

Comments - Lovely triptych depicting women and a young boy admiring the exhibits during the annual Chrysanthemum Festival. The child gestures excitedly at a beautiful display with mannequins as lion dancers. The figures are dressed in robes covered with blossoms, one posing on the ground while the other perches atop a stone bridge over a rushing waterfall. An array of chrysanthemums in red, yellow, pink, white, and violet surrounds the tableau, which is sheltered beneath a blue and white checked roof. The boy wears a traditional kimono and coat, along with a Western style red knit hat topped with a pompom and black leather boots. At left, a beauty hurries to join the group, carrying a small handbag. A wonderful illustration of this famous seasonal festival, with wonderful color and detail, including burnishing in the black coat.
