Original Ginko (active 1874 - 1897) Japanese Woodblock Print
Boxer Rebellion Battle, 1900

Comments - Action-filled scene of Japanese troops attacking the city of Tianjin (Tientsin), China, in 1900. Japan was part of the Eight Nation Alliance, multi-national army, which came to the aid of the foreign settlement in Tianjin after it was attacked by Boxers, an act which resulted in Chinese Imperial Troops attacking the foreigners. Here, a battle rages outside the city walls, with Japanese soldiers on horseback galloping into the fray as infantrymen fire shots and even take part in hand-to-hand combat with the Chinese. The battlefield is chaotic as shells burst overhead and clouds of smoke begin to obscure the fighting. An incredibly detailed illustration from this historic battle and a rare woodblock triptych of the Boxer Rebellion.
