The Four Seasons: Winter, 1857

Comments - Handsome triptych depicting Prince Genji relaxing on a verandah with a group of beauties. He leans back on his hand at right, smiling as he takes a toothpick from his mouth. The beauty next to him holds a coat that matches his kimono. A banquet has been spread out on the floor before him, including a platter with a large fish, and the young woman kneeling at bottom center holds a small sake cup. At left, a woman smiles as she tunes her shamisen. Most interestingly, a kabuki performance of the play "Seki no To" is taking place outside, with the border guard Sekibei attacking the Spirit of a Cherry Tree with an enormous axe as she waves a flowering branch. A beautifully colored and detailed design, with embossing in the white kimono trim and fine bokashi shading in the night sky.
