Sanada Yukimura's Hiding Place at Mt. Kudo, No. 42 - Tokugawa Ieyasu banished Sanada Yukimura to Mt. Kudo in Kii Province after the Battle of Sekigahara. His wife traveled a long way from their home in Shinano Province to see him, but he was not allowed to see her. Instead, he asked his son to give her his mirror. She stands outside the garden gate, head bowed, the mirror tucked under her arm, while Yukimura watches in silence. After escaping, Yukimura died in the fight against the Tokugawa at Osaka Castle. Yukimura is shown in the inset above aiming a gun. A lovely scene with expressive figures and fine detail, including burnishing in the black robe and embossing in the white kimono trim.
