Comments - Handsome kabuki scene featuring Yajirobei and Kitahachi, the bumbling heroes of the novel "Shank's Mare Tokaido," which chronicles their comic misadventures traveling by foot along the Tokaido Road. Here, Yaji and Kita listen to a blind musician performing while staying at an inn. He taps the back of a shamisen with wooden sticks, using it as a drum, while the pair watches. One of them leans forward with his hand out while the other drinks a cup of sake, gesturing with his hand. From left, the figures are the playwright Matsushima Tsuruji, Asao Yoroku II as Nebuichi, Sawamura Tossho II as Kitahachi, and Bando Hikosaburo IV as Yajirobei. Attractively colored with a nicely detailed setting.
