The White Surcoat

Series; New Patterns of Brocade Woven in Utamaro Style

From a Meiji collection of reprints, over 100 years old - This print is offered with a small group of reprints collected in the early 20th century (ca. 1920) by a Tokyo collector. The reprints that we are offering this evening were collected nearly 100 years ago and have the beautiful sense of age expected of the period. They are finely printed and well preserved. We have just a few of these lovely old reprints. Available for a small fraction of the cost of an original, they are perfect to frame and display or collect.

The White Surcoat - Fantastic portrait by Utamaro showing a young beauty in an elegant white outer kimono. She kneels on the floor, the fabric swirling around her as she pulls the robe closed. The white kimono is trimmed with a plum tie-dyed print, worn over a red checked under robe tied with a green and white dotted obi. A lovely combination of soft colors and patterns in this attractive design. Detailed with delicate embossing in the folds of the kimono and shimmering mica on the white kimono collar.

Artist - Utamaro (1750 - 1806)

Image Size - 15" x 10" + margins as shown

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Slightly darkened with age. Please see photos for details. Very nice overall.
