Harunobu (1724 - 1770) Japanese Woodblock Reprint
Returning Sails of the Towel Rack

Series; Eight Views of the Parlor

Eight Views of the Parlor - In Japan, the scenic "Eight Views of Omi" was a popular subject for woodblock print artists, featuring specific landscapes and weather conditions in Omi Province. Some artists adapted the theme of "Eight Views" using different locations such as Kanazawa or Edo. Harunobu went a step further with his witty parody titled "Eight Views of the Parlor," using scenes from everyday life in place of the famous sites. He likens the sound of a boiling teakettle to a night rain, and a towel on a rack blowing in the evening breeze to the billowing of a sail. These attractive designs feature Harunobu's lovely delicate line work and beautifully detailed settings. A great Edo era series by this ukiyo-e master.

Takamizawa Reprints - Handsome reprint by the venerable Takamizawa publisher. Takamizawa was known as one of the finest reprint publishers of the 20th century, and produced some of the highest quality ukiyo-e woodblock reprints of all time. Drawing on the traditions and methods of the Edo era, the prints were produced replicating original Edo era colors and printed on beautiful handmade paper. The printers worked with the utmost care and great attention to detail, masterfully reproducing color and line work. All prints bear a "Takamizawa" seal on the reverse or in the margin attesting to the Takamizawa publication of these prints. A great opportunity to acquire a fine reprint of a classic ukiyo-e design.

Returning Sails of the Towel Rack - Terrific Harunobu design from a series parodying the famous "Eight Views of Omi" using scenes from everyday life. A beauty stands on the verandah dipping water from a basin while her companion inside sews. Wonderful color and fine detail, including embossing on the white obi.
