Prince Genji on a Moonlit Boat Ride, 1854

Comments - Handsome triptych depicting Prince Genji and his guests enjoying a boat ride on a moonlit night, gently rippling water splashing along the sides of the craft. The nobleman sits in the center holding an unusual one-stringed zither called an ichigenkin. He wears a black coat patterned with chrysanthemums over a yellow kimono. The beauty at left smiles as she looks at him, a biwa or lute resting at her knee. A young samurai at far right serenades the group with flute music. A flock of geese descends for the evening, flying through the misty sky illuminated by a glowing full moon. An attractive subject with fine bokashi shading in the water and sky.
