Kagoshima Newspaper: The Battle for Kumamoto Castle, 1877

Comments - Incredible scene from the Satsuma Rebellion of the Battle of Kumamoto Castle in Kagoshima. Rebel samurai attacked the castle, which was held by Japanese Imperial Army troops. The warriors are gathered outside the moat, waiting to charge, as a cannon is fired at right, the shell exploding above the rooftop of the fortress. A general on horseback waves a red flag bearing the crest of the Shimazu Clan of Satsuma, the symbol used by the rebels. At left, soldiers atop the walls fire down at the attackers, clouds of gray smoke drifting across the landscape. A handsome composition with an interesting perspective, nicely detailed.
