Ghost Visiting a Beauty, 1857

Comments - Terrific kabuki scene of the ghost of a man visiting a beauty, kneeling at left with his hand out before him. He looks up at her with a sorrowful expression, his face and lips shaded with blue. The beauty smiles happily as she turns away from a small household altar with an ancestor tablet on it. Wisps of smoke and blue flames rise from the incense burner, a sign of a supernatural occurrence. At right, a samurai watches warily from the doorway, his sword in hand. A niche at the back of the room holds another incense burner on a red lacquer stand before a scroll, with a box leaning up against the wall. The folding screen at left depicts autumn grasses, and an elegant go board rests on the floor behind the spirit. From left, the actors are Ichikawa Kodanji IV, Onoe Kikugoro IV, and Bando Hikosaburo V. A great supernatural subject with a wonderfully detailed setting.
