Comments - Great kabuki scene from a play about two sisters who are reunited to avenge the death of their father. Here, the young woman Shinobu has traveled to Edo from her country home in search of her long-lost sister, who has become the beautiful courtesan Miyagino. After arriving at the Daikoku-ya brothel, she meets her sister and tells her the sad news that the samurai Shiga has killed their father, and the pair agree to immediately seek out the murderer. The proprietor Soroku overhears them, and thinking he will attempt to stop them, they try to kill him; however, he encourages them to be like the Soga Brothers and be patient. Soroku stands at right, gesturing with a mirror, a tobacco set in his other hand. Miyagino kneels beside a black lacquer makeup chest, tilting her head slyly and watching him from the corners of her eyes. She wears a lovely red floral kimono bordered with a tan brocade print. Shinobo smiles sheepishly at left, a knife concealed behind her back. Onoe Kikujiro II appears as Miyagino. Beautiful detail in the elegant interior setting, which include a floral arrangement of irises in a scroll niche, and shelves holding scrolls and lacquer boxes. A wonderful design from this classic drama.
