Original Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864) Japanese Woodblock Print

Comments - Attractive kabuki triptych depicting a michiyuki or dance interlude about a journey, usually with a romantic aspect. Here, a trio pauses for a rest while traveling alongside a meandering stream. The young man in the center holds a robe over his shoulder, looking unhappily at the beauty at left. She holds her sleeve to her chin, a worried expression on her face, while the young woman at right seems oblivious to their concerns, grinning happily as she watches them. They wear matching kimono with an unusual design: one side is light blue with swallows in flight, while the other side is gray with white geese in flight. An ancient plum tree covered with beautiful pink and white blossoms and buds fills the background beneath a night sky. A charming scene, attractively colored, with a lovely spring setting.
