Original Toyokuni I (1769 - 1825) Japanese Woodblock Print
Ichikawa Danjuro

Comments - Handsome kabuki portrait of Ichikawa Danjuro as an angry yakko or footman, his eyes bulging with rage as he holds a black lacquer box in his outstretched hand. His feet are spread firmly apart, and his other hand is flung out at his side. He wears a purple coat over a brown kimono patterned with gray sickles and circular motifs, with a distinctive striped green and white collar. Two black crows fly overhead ominously above the stone wall of a daimyo's mansion. A great expressive figure.
