Original Meiji era Japanese Woodblock Print
Kabuki Character Surimono

Maruyama-Shijo School Surimono - Interesting Meiji era surimono from a group by artists of the Maruyama-Shijo School in Kyoto. The school's style combined the direct observation and realism of Western artists with traditional Japanese painting techniques. Surimono are a subcategory of Japanese woodblock prints, usually commissioned by poetry clubs for distribution to their members, most often as New Year's greetings. These attractively colored prints combine poems along with nature scenes, auspicious animals representing the zodiac signs, or even kabuki characters. The British Museum has several of these designs in its collection. A charming Meiji era example of a traditional Japanese woodblock form.
