Battle between Kai and Echigo Provinces, 1864

Comments - Dramatic scene from the Battle of Kawanakajima in October 1561 between the forces of Takeda Shingen of Kai Province and Uesugi Kenshin of Echigo Province. In the center, the Kai general Yamamoto Kansuke attempts to rally his exhausted troops for their last stand. Bleeding from wounds to the head and body, he grips a bloodied spear as he looks back over his shoulder at the fighting behind him, sitting astride his horse. At right, a wounded warrior leans heavily on his spear, while at left a samurai wraps a strip of cloth around his bleeding arm, using his teeth to hold one end. The ground is littered with broken weapons, and a dying samurai lies face down, his lips and face a ghastly shade of blue. Clouds of orange smoke billow across the night sky above the rooftops in silhouette. A terrific design with a great composition, beautifully colored.
