Series; One Hundred Ghost Stories

Memorial Anniversary - Intriguing scene from Hokusai's fantastic ghost series. This image depicts a menacing looking serpent coiled around a memorial ancestor tablet and the offering before it of a cup of water and tray of sweets. The snake winds through the pile of sweets set on layers of tissue, looking up with a keen eye. A small leaf floats atop the water in the ceramic cup decorated with a swastika, an ancient symbol of good luck in Buddhism. Beautifully detailed with fine line work in the intricate scales and embossing in the black lacquer offering tray. A terrific design from this rarely seen series.

Artist - Hokusai (1760 - 1849)

Image Size - 9 1/2" x 7 1/8" + margins as shown
