The Soga Brothers Begging for Their Lives at Yuigahama, 1885

Comments - Dramatic scene of the young Soga Brothers at Yui Beach, about to be executed by two retainers of their father's murderer, who was afraid of revenge. Here, the boys kneel quietly on straw mats, Juro clasping his hands together in prayer as the two swordsmen stand ready with weapons in hand. At left, a messenger rides along the curving line of the shore, desperately waving a folding fan to get their attention as he carries a reprieve. White capped waves lap at the shore and the sun shines along the horizon, presenting an otherwise idyllic landscape. A great image from this classic tale, with fine bokashi shading in the water and sky, and a burnished geometric in the black robe and pants at right.
