View of Teppozu and Tsukiji, Tokyo, 1869

Comments - Incredible panoramic view of Teppozu and Tsukiji in Tokyo, the site of the foreign settlement. The new Shimabara Pleasure Quarters in Teppozu was completed in 1868 to serve the foreigners living in Tsukiji, which was also established the same year. The streets are lined with teahouses and busy with visitors, courtesans, and laborers. High-ranking oiran courtesans parade about in their most elegant kimono, accompanied by attendants and sheltered with servants carrying umbrellas. Blossoming cherry trees dot the area, and gates into the fenced quarters can be seen at top and bottom right. Rooftops stretch out into the distance, with bridges across a canal at left and boats on the water in the distance. A fascinating design accompanied by text below. Attractively colored and nicely detailed.
