Series: The Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido, 1852
Odawara: Morita Kanya XI as Iinuma Katsugoro - Terrific illustration from the play "Hakone Reigen Izari no Adauchi," which tells the story of the samurai Katsugoro and his loyal wife, Hatsuhana. Katsugoro fell ill while traveling to track down his brother's killer, losing the use of his legs. His faithful wife pulled him on a cart to the waterfall at Hakone, where he was miraculously healed. Looking haggard and worn, Katsugoro leans heavily on a bamboo pole, his hair pulled back into a long ponytail tied with a tan headband. Behind him, fields lead back to a village at the foot of a mountain range. The title cartouche at upper right features the cart on which his wife pulled him. A very expressive image.
