Series: The Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido, 1852

Akasaka: Bando Mitsuemon I as Sawai Sukebei - Fantastic portrait of the actor Bando Mitsuemon I as Sawai Sukebei. The startled samurai looks through a telescope, alarmed by what he sees. His eyes are wide and his mouth is agape as he tries to comprehend just what is happening. Is he surprised by this modern device that makes thing appear up close, or is he stunned by whatever he actually sees taking place? The landscape behind him shows rice fields stretching out across a plain with mountains bordering the horizon. A great expressive image.

Image Size - 13 3/4" x 9 5/8" + top margin as shown

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Slight soiling, a few wrinkles near top edge. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
