Famous Restaurants of the Eastern Capital - Handsome print from a collaborative series by Toyokuni III and Hiroshige, published between 1852 and 1853. Toyokuni III created the large actor portraits in the foreground, with Hiroshige designing the smaller landscape and still-life insets relating to the featured restaurant or its location. The Nakakatsu Restaurant, 1852 - Terrific kabuki portrait of Ichikawa Danjuro VIII in the role of Yoshitaka from the play "Kagamitama Moto-no-nishikie." The young samurai raises his sword high above his head, a sorrowful expression on his face. The insets above show a basket of fish and two peasants leading horses laden with firewood. The restaurant corresponding to this image is Nakakatsu, located in Shinjuku. Detailed with a faint burnished geometric pattern in the samurai's black kimono. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts has this image in its collection.
