Comments - Terrific illustration of the Shogun Minamoto no Yoritomo's hunting party at the base of Mt. Fuji in 1193. A giant boar attacked the party and the brave warrior Tadatsune killed the wild beast. Here, Tadatsune straddles the back of the enormous snarling animal he prepares to stab it with his sword, its body pierced with arrows. Several beaters are knocked to the ground by the raging animal. At left, an archer on horseback takes aim, while the shogun watches from the hilltop behind him, surrounded by his retainers. The hunt continues in the valley below as deer, rabbits, and foxes flee from archers on horseback and beaters driving them forward on foot. The rugged gray peak of Mt. Fuji fills the background. A lively scene, filled with energy and action, nicely detailed.
