Ashikaga Takauji at the Battle of Hyogo, 1847 - 1852

Comments - Terrific scene of the great leader Ashikaga Takauji at the Battle of Hyogo. The founder and first shogun of the Ashikaga Shogunate, Takauji sits astride a dappled horse, glaring sternly over his shoulder as he grips the striped reins. Warriors approach him from all sides, some gesturing while others swing swords and spears. At right, a samurai chases an enemy, striking him on the shoulder with his blade while another adversary tumbles from the pathway into a rice paddy. A castle rises in the distance beyond the fields, the view framed by pine trees. A great Edo era design with expressive figures and an attractive landscape setting. The Boston Museum of Art has this image in its collection.
