Ariwara no Yukihira on the Beach at Suma

Comments - Terrific image of the ninth-century courtier Ariwara no Yukihira on the beach of Suma Island. Having offended the Fujiwara Clan, he was exiled to the isle for three years, where he met two sisters, Murasame and Matsukaze, who collected seawater for salt making. They both fell in love with him, and after his departure, their spirits waited on the beach for his return. He is shown here sitting on a cluster of rocks next to a boat, an unusual one-stringed instrument lying across his lap. One of the sisters kneels beside him as the other approaches carrying a basket of fish. A full moon glows softly in the evening sky and waves lap upon the shore. A lovely moonlit scene with delicate embossing in the man's white robe, a dusting of silvery mica along the shore, and soft shading in the sky.
