Oji

Series; Thirty-six Comic Views of Famous Places in Tokyo

Oji - Charming scene from a series Ikkei did in the early 1870s parodying Hiroshige's "One Hundred Famous Views of Edo." Here, a man and two beauties enjoy a picnic beneath the Changing Tree at Oji, interrupting the gathering of foxes at New Year's. A beauty pours sake into the man's cup as he worriedly points to his mouth, a fox nibbling at a package of food behind them. Another fox peers around the stacks of grain beneath the tree, while a few people with lanterns walk across the dark fields in the distance. An entertaining version of Hiroshige's famous subject, nicely shaded with handsome wood grain impression in the sky.
