Monk Writing a Poem,1856

Comments - Handsome kabuki double portrait showing two travelers pausing for a rest. At top, young monk smiles as he looks back over his shoulder, a brush and poem slip in hand as he composes a verse. A large black lacquer hat hangs at his back, and a satchel rests on his chest. His companion looks up at him with a tight-lipped frown, a yoke resting on his shoulders. He wears a boldly checked kimono over a black undergarment, a twisted dotted towel knotted around his head. The actors are Nakamura Fukusuke I and Iwai Kumesaburo III. An interesting design, nicely detailed.

Artist - Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Image Size - 14 1/8" x 9 3/4"

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Backed with thin paper. A few small holes, repaired, blends well. Slight soiling, a few creases. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
