Night Battle at Shijo in Kyoto, 1864

Comments - Dramatic scene of a night attack at a mansion at Shijo in Kyoto. In the center, a warrior in full armor thrusts a spear into the private quarters of a daimyo, who immediately grabs the weapon, glaring back at his attacker. He seems to have been interrupted during his studies, as a folded book of texts has tumbled to the floor from a low black lacquer desk a right. At left, a furious battle takes place, with surprised retainers in kimono fighting the armored attackers. Two wounded men lie piled in a heap at left as a samurai in a blue kamishimo patterned with cranes races after his enemy, his legs and feet bleeding. The fight continues on the verandah outside, with arrows protruding from walls and pillars. A fantastic image filled with energy and action, beautifully colored with a handsomely detailed setting. A great early battle triptych by Yoshitoshi.
