The Aftermath of the Great Kanto Earthquake - Incredible design from a series depicting the aftermath of the Great Kanto Earthquake on September 1, 1923. The earthquake struck the Kanto Plain, devastating Tokyo, Yokohama, and the surrounding area, the quake triggering enormous fires from overturned cooking stoves which quickly spread among the wooden buildings. More than 120,000 people were killed, and another 2 million were left homeless. These woodblock prints capture the aftermath of the earthquake, depicting walls of flames, buildings reduced to rubble, and survivors attempting to navigate the decimated area. These dramatic images are an amazing contemporary record of this tragic event. Some prints include a label on the back, which will be shown if included.
