The Battle of Ishibashiyama, 1847 - 1852

Comments - Fantastic depictiong of the Battle of Ishibashiyama between the Taira and Minamoto, taking place under a driving rain. In the center, a warrior riding a black horse wields a naginata with both hands, having just knocked an enemy from his horse. The wounded samurai falls to the ground, bleeding at the throat and face as additional troops rush up behind him on horseback and on foot. At left, a determined warrior draws back his sword with eyes blazing as two fallen men scramble on the ground before him. A cloth tent wall bearing the butterfly crest of the Taira Clan hangs from poles at the base of a rocky cliff at left, while flames can be seen in the distance at top center. A dramatic depiction filled with energy and action, wonderfully detailed and richly colored.

Artist - Yoshikazu (active circa 1850 - 1870)

Image Size - 27 1/4" x 13 7/8"

Condition - This triptych with excellent color and detail. Three separate panels. A light horizontal crease at center. A few small holes repaired. Please see photos for details. Nice overall.

A Country Estate - Over three days we’ll be offering the collection of a Japanese gentleman who collected primarily Yoshitoshi and Kuniyoshi prints of tales, warriors, and ghosts. We love those themes at Fuji Arts and Yoshitoshi and Kuniyoshi are two of our favorite artists. The prints are all fine early impressions with beautiful color. They’ve been stored only, never displayed.

The collection was brokered this fall by a contact of ours and came from the Japanese countryside where the collector lived. These prints have not been in the market in decades and are being offered at Fuji Arts for the first time outside Japan. Watch for the collection to post over three days. The collection will post in its entirety, about 60 designs, in three days.
