The Benten Shrine at Haneda

From an untitled series of landscapes in Western style

Publisher - Adachi from a rare series of Edo masterwork designs. Adachi publisher seal in margin or on reverse.

Adachi was one of the most respected publishers of the 20th century. Their woodblocks were printed to the highest standards with excellent color and fine detail. Founded in 1925, Adachi also chose interesting and varied subjects for their prints and was the only publisher of many famous old ukiyo-e images.

The Benten Shrine at Haneda - Interesting view of an unusually steep slanted bridge on the path to Benten Shrine, which is shown in the distance beyond a torii gate at left. Two beauties cross the bridge, their attendants following behind them, returning from a visit to the shrine. The curved horizon and shading on the banks and roofs show an interest in Western art techniques. A handsome landscape from an early series, surrounded by a border decorated with delicate scrolls.

Artist - Hokusai (1760 - 1849)

Image Size - 8 3/8" x 13 3/8" + margins as shown

Condition - Excellent overall with no issues to report.
