Evening at Ryogoku Bridge in the Eastern Capital

Comments - Terrific triptych depicting the Sumida River crowded with pleasure boats as residents of Edo enjoy a summertime fireworks display. At left, a large boat is filled with beauties gathered around a sumptuous meal in the cabin, with men clambering atop the roof, the edges of the cabin strung with colorful red lanterns. A smaller boat at right is filled with traveling musicians, who play drums and flute for the merrymakers. At far right, a man lounges atop a boat, resting his head in his hands as he smiles happily, enjoying the festivities. The arched Ryogoku Bridge is packed with viewers, and a large exploding shell radiates light across the dark sky dotted with stars. A fantastic depiction of this favorite summer activity, with lively detail, capturing the energy and excitement of the scene. A great Edo era subject.
