Original Chikanobu (1838 - 1912) Japanese Woodblock Print
Ushiwakamaru and Advisor

Comments - Attractive kabuki print of a young samurai Ushiwakamaru (the future Yoshitsune) listening to an advisor, who gestures with his fan as he talks. The samurai stares at him solemnly, wearing a green outer robe patterned with the paulownia symbol of the Minamoto, his hair pulled back into a youthful style with two loops tied with a white ribbon. A wooden armor chest, arrows, and a bow rest against the wall behind him. The older warrior wears geometric print kamishimo over armor and a red kimono, his hair tied tightly into a ponytail. Beyond the rustic wooden porch made of logs, a waterfall can be seen in the distance. Nakamura Fukusuke plays Ushiwakamaru and the older samurai is Ichikawa Danjuro. A handsome design with lively color, nicely detailed.
